Adult acne is one of the most common complaints at laserpod with both men and women experiencing issues with spots and acne well into adulthood.

Whilst teenage skin is widely spoken about for many people acne can persist well into the adult years. Understandable inflammation and acne doesn’t make any of us feel great. It’s not only visible but coverup attempts can simply exacerbate the problem.

Acne can be treated. There might not be an overnight cure but there are a range of treatments and often the best solution for acne is a bespoke skin consultation (FREE at laserpod) so we can provide the best-suited treatment for you. Sometimes it is a case of trial and error depending on how your skin reacts but we can make a difference even to the most sensitive of skin.

What Causes Acne?

Acne can be caused by a number of factors, hormones, genetics, stress, and occasionally diet. Acne forms when your pores become blocked which can lead to bacteria causing spots and inflammation.

It’s a myth that acne is caused by not washing your skin regularly, actually over washing can make matters worse causing skin irritation. Stress may also contribute to acne.

Approximately 25% of men and 50% of women will be affected by adult acne. Women can often experience hormonal acne which will be worse around the time they get their period.

Grade 1 Is mild, mostly blackheads, whiteheads and a few pustules and papules.
Grade 2 Moderate, multiple pustules and papules
Grade 3 Large more inflamed pustules and some cysts
Grade 4 More severe cyst and can be on back and chest

Most acne is hormonal. The hormonal imbalance affects the skins ph balance. The skin naturally reacts to this by producing more skin cells to protect itself. Up to 4 times than normal skin. This builds upon the skin causing the pores to become blocked. Skin will then produce more oil to balance the ph. This becomes blocked in the pores where and becomes a perfect breeding ground for the acne bacteria, which causes the infection.

What Is The Best Way To Treat Acne?

There is no one size fits all solution with acne so we will need to do a skin assessment to recommend the best course of acne treatment for you.

Treatments available

Treatments may take several months to clear spots and inflammation but the earlier you start the less scarring you will have. We will work with you to find the best solution for your skin troubles.

If you have active acne we might recommend one of the following treatments:

Skin Peels –Skin peels contain glycolic & salicylic acid to reduce oil production, exfoliate the skin, unclog pores and kill bacteria. They are completely safe and painless with little or no downtime – just minimal redness.

The glycolic exfoliates the excess skin cells to unblock the pores and the salicylic will kill the p acne bacteria (this can get deep into the pores). Along with some good home care products, this will improve hugely. Once the infection has calmed, we can treat the scars with micro-needling. See Derma roller

Derma Pen – we have seen great results actively improving acne by minuscule damage to the skin and speeding up the production of collagen and oxygen. The bacteria that causes acne is killed and new skin cells are stimulated.

Derma Roller – Derma Roller is an effective treatment for acne scarring once the acne is under control.
