What is a Derma Roller Treatment?

The derma roller treatment is a process of rolling a high-quality titanium roller over the skin’s surface to kick-start the skin’s natural healing process. This process usually takes 15-20 mins on the face and 30-45 mins on the body (depending on surface area). The skin is left with a slight sunburnt appearance, which subsides within 24 hours.

Derma Roller treatment is occasionally referred to as micro-needling. The process involves running a device with tiny needles over your skin, pricking the surface.

This creates shallow injuries to your skin in the treated area. Whilst this might sound scary, the benefit of this minor skin damage is to trick the skin into healing itself effectively! These tiny needle puncture wounds encourage the skin to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin.

In response to this, your skin begins to renew itself, which treats skin surface damage such as acne scars, sun damage, and uneven complexion. Derma Rollers can also be used for skin tightening and to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and ageing skin.

What happens during treatment?

Before any treatment, you will need a FREE skin assessment to be sure you are suitable – we do not recommend this treatment for anyone with active acne as it could spread the infection.

Your aesthetic therapist will apply topical anaesthetic to the area you are having treated (typically the face).

You will then need to wait for another 40 minutes to ensure you are numb.

Once the anaesthetic has had enough time to be effective we will begin your treatment. The Dermaroller itself is a handheld device covered with lots of small needles clustered together. This Derma Roller is then run over your skin and the tiny needles penetrate the dermis causing a shallow injury approximately 0.1mm in width. This treatment lasts around 20-30 minutes.

I was recommended Lightsheer Duet machine by a friend of mine and having done my research about I found Laserpod clinic on Google. As Laserpod already had had great reviews I decided to book a consultation.I met Siobhan and I quickly realised she really does know what she’s doing and she is very patient! She has both a wealth of experience as well as depth of knowledge about her profession. I normally ask a lot of questions when it comes to any skin/body treatments as I’m very concerned about possible skin issues and I really appreciated how reassuring, helpful and knowledgeable she was.I have been doing laser hair removal at Laserpod since mid 2020. Each appointment has been conducted in a very efficient, professional, and at the same time caring and gentle manner. I have now done several areas (full legs, armpits, bikini, upper lip) and I see a massive difference. Siobhan is absolutely brilliant, and she has ensured I’ve achieved the skin results I was after. I could not recommend her more. There is still some work to be done as lockdowns and the recent events have made it hard for me to progress at a pace I wanted to, so I will continue with the sessions. FAQs - Derma Roller Treatment?

Does it hurt?
The question on the tip of everyone’s tongue when it comes to Derma Rollers tends to be does it hurt. The answer – yes – honestly there will be a little discomfort with this procedure. The topical anaesthetic will minimise pain and our aesthetic therapist will make you as comfortable as possible but unfortunately, it isn’t a pain-free treatment. During the consultation process, we can tell you exactly what happens so you know if it is for you. On the positive side, treatment time is quick and the results are so good it is generally considered worth the pain.

How will I feel after treatment?
Your skin will experience some redness and there might be a little blood so we definitely do not recommend having this before an important meeting, hot date or formal occasion. You will experience no pain after treatment but your skin might be a little tender. The redness can last for around 24 hours but you can cover this up with mineral make-up and go straight back to your daily activities without anyone knowing.

How many treatments will I need?
This will really depend on your skin type and how well your skin responds. You will see some improvements but with any treatment, people respond differently. We have some guidelines below as a rough estimate:

For rejuvenation: We usually recommend between 3-5 treatments with approximately 6 weeks in between them.
For scarring: We usually recommend between 5-7 treatments with approximately 6 weeks in between them.
Of course some clients will need less and we will discuss this with you during each treatment

The Results?
Acne scarring is reduced and your skin will feel smoother with fewer fine lines and wrinkles. Your skin will look fresh and rejuvenated. Most clients report seeing improvements within a week.

Aftercare
Use gentle cleansers and avoid getting the skin too hot. Avoid direct sunlight for a week and ensure you have adequate sun protection. We recommend not using make-up immediately following but appreciate most people prefer to cover up the redness so if you are using make-up ensure it is a mineral make-up so the skin can breathe. You skin may feel dryer than usual so a good quality moisturiser is recommended.
