Get the glow on your skin back with hydration!
Hey there pretty faces!
I’ll start with a question today, how much water did you drink today or how much water do you drink daily? Please note your numbers down, I insist. We’ll see if we want to change those numbers or not.
LET'S TAKE A SCENARIO
We all have had those days when we feel dehydrated or our skin feels so dry because of our busy schedule, overindulgence in things like sugary or salty foods, a late night alcoholic party or just because we tend to drink less water. But then when your water cravings come in and you take your first sip of water, that’s probably the best thing you ever drank. Can you relate to it?
The uneasiness means you are dehydrated. The process of replacing water for uneasiness is known as hydration.
WHY HYDRATION IS IMPORTANT?
Let’s go through the science of hydration to understand its importance. Water is the main source of our body to detoxify waste products. In layman’s language, the waste is pushed out via kidneys, bowel and skin! You must be thinking..what skin?? Well, that’s right skin! Lack of water can make your skin dull, dry and dehydrated. I’m sure you don’t want that! Do you?
Now, let me tell you if the water is not fast-tracked out via the above mentions ways, then things are going to start backing up and ultimately wreaking havoc, resulting in undesirable skin texture. Because of bad skin, a lot of people tend to lose their confidence, which is exactly what we don’t want. Water is essential, especially for the outer layer of the skin known as the stratum corneum (let’s call it SC).
Now, you must be thinking from where does the SC gets the water from. The answer to it is easy peasy! The water is supplied from inside the body. However, when too much water is lost through SC due to external factors like extreme cold (hello winter heating!), it’s then when it starts getting all dried up, resulting in flaky skin texture. According to Verdier-Sevrain, 2007, ‘Increased transepidermal water loss impairs enzymatic functions required for normal desquamation resulting in the visible appearance of dry, flaky skin.’ Bottom line, water is essential for the normal function of our body and of course for glowing skin!
SOME FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW!
Females should drink about 2 litres of water every day whereas the recommended amount of water for males is 2.5 litres per day. Water is absolutely a non-negligible aspect for the good functioning of our body, especially our skin. Let me tell you a very interesting fact- skin is 64% water (Mitchell et al, 1945). What 64%?? Yes, that’s right and hence, I suspect you must understand the role of water for pretty much everything in our body, especially skin!
So, are you going to change those numbers you noted down?
Water- yay or nay??
